Will Pakistan be able to compete with the top teams in the upcoming Champions Trophy? Many fans believed Pakistan was among the favorites to win the tournament. However, after the squad announcement and a disappointing loss to New Zealand in the first match of the tri-nation series, a new debate has emerged.

What Went Wrong for Pakistan?
Pakistan’s current squad, in its current form, appears to have several shortcomings that could prevent them from winning a major tournament like the Champions Trophy. Some key concerns include:
Lack of a Proper Opening Batsman
A solid, dependable opening pair is crucial for setting a strong foundation. Pakistan has struggled in this department, often losing early wickets, putting pressure on the middle order.
Absence of Quality Spin Bowlers
Spin plays a vital role, especially in conditions that favor slower bowling. With only Abrar Ahmed as a genuine spinner in the squad, Pakistan’s attack seems one-dimensional and vulnerable against teams that play spin well.
Lack of a Genuine All-Rounder
In modern cricket, a powerful all-rounder who can contribute with both bat and ball is essential. Pakistan lacks a reliable all-rounder who can provide finishing power in the lower order while also being a handy bowling option.
Pakistan’s Spin Dilemma
The Champions Trophy will be played in Pakistan, not in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) conditions, where pace bowling usually dominates. On home soil, spin will be crucial, yet Pakistan’s squad lacks a second quality spinner. New Zealand exposed this weakness by outclassing Pakistan’s batting lineup with their spin attack.
To address this issue, the PCB, selection committee, Mohammad Rizwan, and Aqib Javed should consider including a specialist spinner like Sufiyan Muqeem or Faisal Akram in the squad. Having an extra spin option will strengthen the bowling attack and provide variety against strong opponents.
Conclusion:
Pakistan has the talent, but the current squad composition raises serious concerns. If the team management does not address the gaps especially in spin bowling, opening stability, and all-round depth winning the Champions Trophy could be a distant dream. The time for changes is now, before it’s too late.
