The United Nations has expressed deep concern over the Israeli military’s use of force during a recent raid in the West Bank, specifically in the Jenin area, which has been a center of Palestinian militancy. The operation, which occurred shortly after a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict with Hamas, involved stretegies described as “developed for war fighting.”
Thameen Al-Kheetan, UN human rights office spokesperson stated, “We are extremely worried about the unlawful use of lethal force in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank.” He criticized the methods as potentially violating international human rights laws and norms related to law enforcement operations, pointing to multiple airstrikes and seemingly random shootings at unarmed residents seeking safety.
Volker Turk, UN human rights chief, has urged Israel to implement rules of engagement that are fully in line with international human rights standards.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the operation, named “Iron Wall,” as a measure to eliminate terrorism in the area.
According to the UN, at least 12 Palestinians were killed and 40 injured by Isreali securtiy forces since Tuesday, with most of them were reportedly unarmed. Al-Kheetan called for thorough and independent investigations into these killings, emphasizing the need for accountability for any unlawful actions.
Additionally, the UN voiced concern over attacks by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, including assaults on Palestinian villages and property, such as vehicles and houses. Al-Kheetan also condemned comments by some Israeli officials regarding plans to expand settlements, tagging such actions a violation of international law and a potential war crime.
The UN called for an immediate end to the violence in the West Bank and urged all parties, including influential third states, to work towards achieving peace in the region.
